US Airmen are still remembered fondly in Lancashire. I live not far from Warton which was a huge USAF base during WW2. Battle damaged planes were repaired, new ones were taken from the boats at Liverpool by road and assembled and flown to airfields, obsolete models were upgraded with the latest weapons or uprated engines, many would be leant to the RAF, Free French & Russians Dad was an Air Cadet during the war and a trip to Warton was a great event for him being a keen plane spotter.

Just curious, is there anything left of the base there?

It's now BAE systems, makers of the Typhoon war plane. The runways and I think many of the buildings are still in use though no doubt with modifications since WW2. It's all very secretive with guards and barriers all over, there's been quite a few USAF planes there including early Stealth war planes which were responsible for the spate of UFO sightings 30 years ago

Thanks. It's likely the original runways were grass as many were back in those days Plus they were likely far shorter.

My sister lives in Warrington, once USAF Burtonwood. Can remember going to Warrington as a kid in the 60s to see my sisters penfriend and seeing a few American cars from the base in town. That was a big base and later i think the Army had it until it closed. not got round to looking round the preserved part of it
