I think the OP has probably made their choice, during the last 11 years! And the question was about a rubbermount.

I like to stretch out on a ride and forwards serve me well when doing Hwy miles. I fully understand crash bars and have them on my big twin. What I do not like is Hwy pegs sticking out past crash bars. And on my Sportsters I want lean and narrow.

CONfusing aint it?

Hey every one, I ride a 83 xlx. I need advise on the mounting differences between the forward position mounting plate between the 84,85 model vs the 1983 frame foot peg and engine mount plate. I ask cause I prefer the configuration of the later year availability. The question is are they interchangeable? What modifications would be needed?

A lot of the bracketry was different, from year to year on most of the frames '77 on up. Your frame was specific for XLX from '83 to EARLY '84. The forward controls, most aftermarkets sell, is for Late '84 and '85. Unless you fab something yourself, the mounting plates probably won't fit well without heavy modification. Check some of the other Ironhead threads on this, maybe someone has already done it.

There's a Big Twin with pegs on the crash bars at my local bike meet (St Anne's) which looks very uncomfortable when I see the guy riding it. Looks like he's waiting for a gynacologist exam with legs spread out at 10 to 2!

When I switched to mids I left the forward pegs incase I ever wanted to use them as highways, but folded them. They've never been folded back down.

I went to mids because I feel unbalanced with my legs in front of me! I'm very tall and somewhat thin. My legs are much of my weight. Just doesn't feel "right" to me.

As for engine guard pegs. Keep em on the inside if you do it! I witnessed what began as a lowside once and suddenly the bike flipped. That outside the guard peg caught in the dirt like a tailhook on a carrier landing.

It was weird and possibly a fluke since the peg SHOULD HAVE folded, but I never wanna try it.

oupa - I think that the riders that ride with forward controls are more comfortable. But as you some riders do not feel comfortable. were you a dirt bike rider as a kid?

'03 set up with XR-type seat and slightly rearset pegs. Shifter is reversed, one up four down.
I don't like forward controls. I want to be able to brake/evade quickly.

It's "the illusion of control"

I like the forward controls....seem to fit me well and makes for a more relaxed ride, or so I think.
