Default Stuck #2cam

New to the forum. After building a hardtailed ‘80 XS650 I’m trying my hand at a Harley. I got a ‘71 XLCH motor with unknown mileage. Breaking it down I’ve only found honest wear in the pistons, lifters, cams and shifter forks. One small crack in the bottom of the left case. Rods, crank, and tranny gears all look good. Where I’m stuck is when removing the cam cover the #2 cam is stuck in the cover. I’ve removed the points plate and mech adv weights. The cam seems to be attached to the advance plate. I don’t want to force things and break something. Any help? My clymer manual or the internet has not given me an answer. Thanks

You should post this in the ironhead section.

You say you removed the weights? Did you unclip the springs and remove just the weights? The center bolt must be removed from the adv unit and the entire adv unit must be removed. Sometimes they need a little bump to remove them from the end of cam, they could get lightly “stuck”. Give it a little side to side persuasion being careful not to bend the post. It should pop off of the cam and allow the cam to come out of cover.

I don’t get why it won’t come out. I’ve locked the cam in a Vice and hammered on the adv plate with a punch an it won’t budge. Yes the points cam and screw are removed. All that’s left in the points cover is the plate with the two posts for the advance weighs. Cam spins freely with the plate but it won’t separate

This is unusual. Moving the plate left and right and up and down while pulling out with your hand is normally all that is needed.

As a last resort, take the cam out of the vice, thread the center bolt in just short of being tight and LIGHTLY tap on the bolt. It should break free.
