Default Weird vibration when riding in 4th gear, not lugging the motor...

Hi there,

Since I own my Ironhead I have some weird vibration that only occurs in 4th gear.

It feels like a vibration that goes sideways and is mostly centered around the middle and rear of the bike.

I've read somewhere that it could be the bearings of the swingarm, but I am curious what other things could be the culprit.

Thanks in advance!

I think you have the right idea.i could feel when mine were acting up.i,bought new ones.then when I,read how to replace them I,found out they were adjustable.i still haven't needed the new ones.

It ONLY happens in 4th gear ?
Check very carefully that it's not happening in any other gear.
See if it occurs at a particular road speed, not gear. Pull the clutch in and coast the bike.
Also check your engine mounts and footpeg mounts. If they come loose you will feel "strange vibrations" (Sung to the tune of Good Vibrations)

hen i had my swing arm bearings going bad i could feel it only in highway speed. but that wasn't vibration, it was more of just hard to keep the track and some sporadic light wobbling

like Ferrous Head suggested, motor mounts would be my first check.

I will check the motor mounts.

Through all other gears I can really get on the throttle, but in 4th its always looking for the sweetspot in which the bike does not vibrate as much.

It is also the reason I almost never get past 70 mph. I just dont like the feeling of it.

Too much throttle and I get the vibration, too little and its the same stuff going on.

And is it a difficult job to replace the swingarm bearings?

It looks like the shaft stops or connects with the primary case and I can just pull it out?

You can feel play in the swing arm.
Pit the bike up on a stand so the rear wheel is off the ground. Try to move the swing arm from side to side. If there is a lot of play there you will feel it.
If there is play, ty adjusting the bearings first to see if that removes the vibration. Thats done with removing the swing arm/bearings.

Well, I don't know how I could have missed it. But both top mounts are missing the bolts.

I don't want to buy a complete kit, so does anyone know what bolts go with the upper mounts?

Both top mounts ?
There is a top engine mount. Front engine mounts and a rear engine mount.
Are we talking the two bolts that go into the cylinder heads ?
The two top rear engine mount bolts ?

In any case, that'll make them vibrate.
