I do have a 1970 900 engine but it's on the shelf. What I'm building here is my 1972 1000.

Another question I have is, can I just get any old 12V condensers, or do I need a specific value or something?
Condensers are rated by their capacity which is MicroFards (MFD) in our case. The higher the capacity the better a job they do.
Fit the highest capacity you can find in the physical space you have.

They perform two functions. They stop sparks across the points gap when they open.
A condenser isn't absolutely necessary for the engine to run but your points will wear out much faster.
