If you go too lean on the main an engine doesn't last very long.

My advice would be to use an A/F meter to do this.

One of the problems is that engines may feel a little stronger, crisper, when run lean. My advice is to always run a little richer which helps keep operating temperatures down.

I have not used plug color as a reliable indicator for probably 20 years now.

The vast majority of people have no idea on how to do a "plug chop" to do a reading in any case.
And the fuel additives in today's horse drainings make it all a lot harder.

To be honest I would probably drop the adjustable main and go back to fixed. Others would be able to advise you on what main they are using and get you pretty close.

There are a lot of variables that effect A/F ratios and what works perfectly at sea level on a hot day in Utah with barometric pressure at 1050 won't be what's needed in the Rockies in winter.

If you put the thing on a dyno and dial it in on there you would have a base to work from.

Or just guess like most people.
fair enough. thanks

hi ferrrous. i went with a cv off an 88 1200. a 45 pilot with a85 main. appears to be running quite well. farts a bit when cold but therwise ok. im goin to pull it off today and check the female boot i have a suspicion there is air gettting in somewhere.
i have been riding it 50 to 150ks a day for a couple weeks now and it is settling in very nice. accelerates like a worked bike should and holds the revs true. i have give it a good few runs at 120kmh and there is so much more it wants to give me. it does vibrate like an ironhead but not excessively. mainly through my feet. but it feels good. the more i ride it the more plyant it becomes. a truely wonerful machine.keeps up with any harley i have rdden with thus far. branko sure knows how to build a bike. take car brother

That's good to hear.
Don't worry too much about how the engine runs when cold. Because it is cold you don't get full atomization of the fuel and the engine will be running lean.
These aren't "heavy" bikes to begin with and if you give them some "ooomph" they will fly. It makes them feel like a really light bike, doesn't it.

Vibrations. Yes, they will vibrate. It worries some people so much they simply don't use higher revs. But these are very strong engines. And the vast majority of them do not breathe well enough to get past red line in top hear. Kind of like a rev limiter.

There are now only a handful of people in Australia who know anything at all about Ironheads and vanishing small numbers who can work on them. The guys who can build you a race engine you can count on one hand.

You have something pretty unique here in Oz now. Let the people see it when you can.

I don't even know if the Barry Sheene or Philip Island is on this year. But you should cjeck them out and get there is you can.

Dawns on me they haven't sent ,e entry forms so, maybe not on. But contact the PCRA (Post Classic Racing Association) and fin out what they are doing. You might even want to join them.
