Update: My Tour Master Pivot 2 jacket - It was extremely dusty and dirty. I threw it in the washing machine with cold water (no detergent) and air dried it. I wore it today and noticed it had faded slightly. Not bad, and I'd probably be the only one to notice it, but I figured I would mention it. I would imagine 30 days in the sun had faded it, not washing it. Before washing it, it was so dusty there would have been no way to know that it had faded.

Xena - Thanks for making this a sticky...yesterday!

Everyone - Thanks for all the positive comments. Isn't this sort of thing what makes this forum work?

Fabulous post! Where can I find pictures? I'm setting off on a two thousand miler in a couple of months and wondered if I would have room for all my stuff. You just proved to me that I will. Invaluable information. I'm glad it's a sticky!

I have no idea really...and honestly, I try *real* hard not to think about it!

The gas would be the easy part to guesstimate (11,000 miles, I probably averaged 45-47 MPG, at whatever the gas prices were at the time...). The other stuff, well a bit harder. But, you can set a budget for yourself and you'll find it's not hard to stay within that if you try. Think of it like this...

Daily expenditures:
$25 - Gas (Current average premium gas $2.75 X say average 400 miles/day @ 45 MPG)
$15 - Camping (a lot of Provincial Parks will be $10-12, some private places $20)
$40 - Food ($10 breakfast, $5 fast food lunch, $5 snacks, $20 dinner)

That's $80/day. You might want to budget a bit more, just in case so plan on $100/day. That way if you end up at a hotel for $50/night you got the wiggle room.

These are rough estimates and you can tweak to fit. For instance I generally eat a couple cookies and an orange juice in the morning, not a $10 breakfast. Don't starve yourself, but eat reasonably and smartly you can save a lot that way (and probably be healthier and feel better for it).

Also, try to use a steady throttle, you'll be amazed at what a difference that can make on extended highway trips. In my normal riding I'm lucky to see 45 MPG, but on a highway trip to see 50 MPG is reasonable.

Camping obviously saves you a bit of money. But, they can vary a great deal. Also, make sure you have cash for them as most won't take much else (especially up north). A few of the Provincial Parks I stayed in Canada simply had drop boxes and no real "services" besides an out house, but were $8 - 12. Obviously, more popular destinations and more services will be more expensive ($20 and up). If you are trying to save money...

But, it's nice to get a real shower and sleep in a real bed every now and again. It's also really nice to ge t out of the rain sometimes. So, you might want to budget for a hotel every now and again. Depending on your standards, you can often find motels for $40-50. When I splurge I usually prefer the $100 variety...

Not sure how much I spent...but the experience WAS PRICELESS!!!
