Default 05 883xl question re: jet size

I've got a question regarding jet size on my 05 883 with screaming eagle mufflers and air cleaner. Bike will be running and suddenly spit. Starts a little hard in the morning even tho Florida temps are in the 60's. Note the bike is at sea level, actually 9 ft above sea level. Bike is new to me with 21k on the clock. Runs good other than the occasional spitting thru the carb. Revs to redline, pulls hard, etc. Any info on proper jetting, carb setting, other things to check would be helpful.

Do you know what jets you have? Have you had the carb apart? Did you set the carb for this particular bike?

The correct jet sizes are discovered (by tuning) - not pre-defined...

You should be able to find your carb listed (with stock jets) in this link:

The factory normally set the idle jet too small for upgraded A/C and pipes, but the main jet may -or- may not be the right size - Tuning is the right way to get to the right jets and adjustment settings...

Great info. I'm familiar with CV carbs but Bings on Airhead beemers. I have torn down one Keihen carb. Just wanted to have the proper jets in hand when I start on mine. Have no idea what's in there. I'll check all fittings, etc for leaks and mounting. Also check idle mixture screw. Thanks for helping me

I had some trouble with my 2005 Roadster carb spitting. The jets were correct for my set up, so I rebuilt the carb(rubber components) and replaced the manifold gaskets. That helped, but when I replaced that stupid vacuum-operated petcock with a Pingel fuel valve petcock(simple valve, no vacuum valve), the bike ran beautifully...problem solved.

But the way, here are the factory jet sizes for the '05 XL 883 listed in the service manual:
Main jet: 175 (180 for Calif.)
Slow jet: 42
Slow idle: 950-1050 RPM

If it helps you some.... I am also at Sea Level - Mediterranean Coast - same sort of temps...

I run 44 Inter - 180 Main.

The occasional spitting trough the Carb is fine.... and usually it goes away with tuning the A/F screw.

I thinks it's a normal by product of a vacuum operated slide to have an occasional hiccup. Especially when blippin' the throttle. If it runs good and your plugs look good, I wouldn't waste too much time or money trying to track down a problem that probably doesn't exist.

Well
Set the idle speed using the idle drop method and get the final to about 1100 rpm
Shim the main needle .021
Change spark plugs to the NGK BRP8ES gapped to .040
Those changes will stop 99% of the carb farts
