When the oil pump is not timed correctly, it turns the engine into an air compressor. You will notice an increase in the primary side oil. Performance will be sluggish and the cases will have way too much oil inside. If the top end is in good shape (new rings etc) it is supposed to smoke until the rings seat. If you are using the wrong ring material, they may never seat. Hastings cast Iron is the best in my opinion. If the cylinders were assembled without knocking the glaze off the inside of the barrels and removing the ridge
ring at the top, they may be broken. None of this is applicable if you had them rebored.
If you pull the barrels make sure to put rags in the case holes, you don't need broken ring pieces dropping into the abyss that is the Sportster case.

Error common to all 4 cams engines (including 45, K, XL & UL:
Cam cover is off, cams are timed to the pinion mark, but... the breather rotor dot is centered in the tower slot.
Ding ding ding: supposed to be when flywheel ignition timing mark is centered, has nothing to do with the cams.

Flywheel timing mark vertical line was centered in timing hole. The gray area of concern on this particular oil pump is the tower slot not being a clean cut slot, it was either a bad casting or damaged. Combined with my old eyes.

i agree with sluggish performance. as far as oil out the breather tube, maybe and maybe not, depends upon how well the scavenge side picks up and how well the centrifugal oil separator is working. while true that down draft helps move oil around, a tooth off in either direction isn't that big of a deal.
i have seen some machines where you could not even align it, had to remove pinion and adjust drive gear. if it shows in the hole, while not spot on, probably no fowl/no harm.
the beauty of the iron is its forgiving nature.

That's where an offset key might work nicely like the one in the link I posted.

As to the breather timing. From post #1 and #13 it sounds like the timing is where it should be. A picture would help.

An offset key would not work with this. The only key in the assembly that could possibly alter the pump timing would be the key at pinion shaft to flywheel. Offsetting that would also move the cam timing and there is a oil hole line up there too.

Breather timing can be fine tuned by changing the position of the pump gear on the pinion shaft. Either by moving it in by shimming or out by grinding the back side of the pinion gear.
But I don't think there is a problem here.

True the cams can be advanced or retarded by using an offset key in the #2 cam drive gear. But in regards to the breather timing the cams don't drive the breather so the key would have no affect on it.

The camshafts are factory Harley Davidson "PB" cams.
