Well it looked like some kind of cork like material when I swapped my pipes out and reused the stock gaskets. What is it made of?

I haven't analyzed the gaskets in extreme detail however they are crushable metallic with who knows what else if anything else in them? They aren't made out of anything that would burn easily from the hot exhaust. I can see how they might look like cork if the exhaust had been leaking around them and discolored them for any length of time.
