Always sucks to see a brand bite the dust. I considered a Buell before I settled on the Sporty. Since Harley owns MV Agusta, perhaps that is a more profitable sportbike line that gives them a space in that market.
Probably explains the recent HD stock uptick. The reality is that HD is probably still reeling from the recession and trying everything they can to stay competitive and profitable.

They anounced a 2-month production halt a few weeks ago, so I imagine production is officially done. I don't think they have plans to sell the brand, although they should. Buell could have flourished long ago had they had stand-alone dealers and been allowed by HD to compete in more racing classes.

No - it's reported that they're looking to offload MV... if they can find a buyer.
They're consolidating their core business of selling chrome doodads, baby clothing and canine accessories.

Now I may be reaching but if as quoted by Eric Buell himself "The Company made the decision to discontinue the Buell product line as part of its strategy to focus on growth through the Harley-Davidson brand." and "Buell has introduced many advancements in motorcycle design and technology over the years. Harley-Davidson will continue to benefit from that knowledge going forward and it’s possible that some of this technology will find its way into a Harley-Davidson motorcycle."
I feel that the XR is a step in that direction.

That sucks. They had some of the fastest bikes in the NHRA. Although, not to many stock parts on them.

Looks like you hit the nail on the head. I found this story.

Guess they figure they better get back to their core business of bikes and merchandising in a hurry.
