Default New Tech Article - How to Spot Check Cam Timing

I just put a new article up on the Hammer Performance web site titled "How to Spot Check Cam Timing"

As always, proofreading, rocks, and rotten tomatoes are welcome

This article is intended as an aid to cam installation, in those cases where the cam timing marks leave room for interpretation and you're not quite sure you've got them right. It goes over a quick and dirty method to check your work.

I'm gonna bump this to the top with a question.

How wide of a tolerance is typically acceptable?

I'm currently ass-deep into the painstaking task of fitting XB .551's into a Sporty case and doing my darndest to figure the cam orientation without the marks.

The closest I could get on the front cylinder is .245/.100 and .206/.094 in the rear (specified TDC lift is .192/.122 for those playing along from home). The "extreme" example in your article is only .010" off in either direction, but I'm almost .050" off on the front intake..

Is that gonna be too far advanced? If I roll the front intake back one tooth, I retard down to .169.

I believe I'm as close to TDC as I could possibly be. I watched through the flywheel porthole and also used the straw in the sparkplug hole method. The primary cover is off so I was able to manipulate the crank slowly and steadily by hand.

It makes me feel dumber than I usually think I am.
