Great write-up. That 3M adhesive is good stuff; I've used it to reapholster a couple seats, and it holds great. For the helmets, it probably works even better. I knew a guy who wanted to make a helmet custom-fit his head, and he contemplated putting the helmet on without the styrofoam, then spraying Great Stuff up in it until it hardened. LOL. Yeah, we talked him out of it, but I still kind of wanted to see it happen...

Great Job!!

The impact styrofoam has a lifetime of five years. After that your suppose to replace it or, the helmet because it has degraded to the point of not performing properly.

I've read that, too. I know a lot of people believe that, a lot don't. Kinda like the motor oil debate. lol!

I live in a non-helmet state, so as far as the legality, meh. As far as safety, I don't think anything from this vintage is as safe as a current item regardless of its condition; right down to my 73 rigid with rear drum.

I have a SHOEI FF helmet I bought back in 1996, it was the best helmet I ever owned, after about eight years, the foam was so wore out where it sits on top my pointy head that wearing it was unbearable to say the least (the inside on top has 3 narrow bands of foam about 4"x1/2"x1/2"), I put up with it for short rides only, then one day I found this large piece of 'bubble wrap', the large bubble type. I cut off a rectangle piece about 8x4" and put it inside the helmet, what a world of difference the bubble wrap made, the short side is that it lasts as long as I don't squeeze the bubbles...LoL!! It was a quick fix, I've replaced that bubble wrap on many occasions as they bubbles lose 'air'!!

That's awesome! lol! Just pick yourself up some foam from Walmart or the fabric store & give 'er hell. 3 strips would be super easy to do. You could even velcro them in so you can remove and hand wash when they get funky.

Revieve an old thread here. So any more success stories? Thinking of trying this to revive an old carbon fiber half shell. Was my exs and a size to small for me but thought maybe with the right selection of foam I could remedy that lol.

I tried my hand at this. My buddy has a lot of old new stock helmets from the 70's but the pads are weathered & gone.
