Default Viking bags For Harley Sportster 1200 (Product #8238)

Bought these in Jan 2018. Product description says Viking leather. This morning I noticed that the straps were all cracked already.

Contacted Viking Bags customer service who said: Viking leather is synthetic.

That stinks of misleading advertising imho.

BTW he also said ALL Viking products are made with Viking leather.

I think 'misleading' is putting it mildly.

They don't mention on their website that they use the term "Viking leather" to mean synthetic leather.

So I went ahead and asked a question on the Q&A tab of their product description. I asked whether Viking leather was genuine leather. As of a minute ago, my question has still not been posted on their website. I've also uploaded pics of the cracks. Let's see if they do anything other than lay low and hope I go away.

The least they could do is call them like leather. Or is that leather lyke?

Their dishonest behavior appears intentional. I saw on Amazon that, earlier this year a customer asked them point blank:

Is "Viking leather" "genuine leather" or just a name for Viking imitation leather?

Their answer was: Viking leather

I usually condition mine and I haven't had a problem with them.
The right lid cracked at the seam but I also opened it up in below 20F weather.

Still using them though. They still function well... even cracked.

Take a closer look at the stitches, that it's not how real leather would look like if it was stitched.
"This leather saddlebag is made from high quality Viking leather and is key lockable."

https://www.vikingbags.com/viking-da...cycle-tool-bag

Calling it 'Viking leather' is nonsense, it's just artificial leather and it's a steep price tag for it.
Nothing wrong with artificial leather, it can be quite good and sturdy. But just don't sell it as 'leather', it's synthetic.

I guess I've gotten numb to all the artificial sweeteners.
Every company I could name does the same thing.
That's how they survive.
But I agree they should be more honest than that.
All in all, they are good bags, for me anyway.
To get the size and function these have, I'd have to pay out the arse for others.
So, if I have to redesign them later, I'll just have to do what I have to do.

Viking leather comes from Viking Cattle. If anyone remembers the Korean made Motorcycle jackets of the '60's, '70's and '80s', Korean cows were very thin skinned!
This what I found on their home page: "All Viking Bags' products are made from premium quality leather." Now if it's anything like the leather in the newer cars, it's sewn different than clothing and the way bags used to be made, now and they use vinyl in some panels.

Oh yeah, absolutely. If they look great and doing their job, what more can you want? Most of the times real leather costs three or four times as much. Artificial leather is often more water resistant, because the won't let water through. Wet 'real' leather will mold and sag if not dried properly.

Dunno how it's in the US, but here you cannot sell it as 'leather'. It has to have a leather marking stamped in it that it's real. Or it can be accompanied by a small piece of leather that is connected to it with a marking that says 'Genuine Leather'.
