Been doing more research and it does appear that those marks on the pressure plate are likely just casting marks as a couple of you suggested.

I had the dreaded clutch squeal. It also had a funky, inconsistent engagement I could feel thru the lever when it squealed. I added Red Line LIMITED-SLIP FRICTION MODIFIER an ounce at a time 'til it went away.
