Default Range feature on the speedo/tach combo

Finally got to ride the bike after I had installed the new fuel level sensor. I had totally forgotten about the range feature until I was scrolling thru the displays.

Question I have is, is the range shown till basically empty, or is it until the stock low fuel light would come on? I rode around 15 miles yesterday and the range shows I have 163 miles.

Seems I've read the 4.5 gallon tank actually holds right at 4 gallons so each of the four fuel level bars should be around one gallon?

Of course, fuel range is affected by how you ride...

I think someone (Folkie?) mentioned that the range feature monitors how you ride and makes continuous calculations to better represent what it believes is the remaining miles. And it gets better as it bases the displayed range on the previously captured info from your riding...

Neither. It's still shown after the low fuel light comes on, but changes to show 'Low Range' when there's just a handful of miles range left.

At about 50 miles remaining the low fuel light comes on, 10 miles to empty I get the LOW, with it pretty much at about 0 miles, I put about 4.2 to 4.4 gals in the 5 gal tank on my Softail FXLR, I would think it would be similar for the Sportster. Yes it will adapt as it goes, beware once the light goes on it always seems to go down at a little faster rate than it had previously. I still just keep an eye on my trip odometer as well, but it seems to have a few more miles past 0, I wouldn't try too stretch it though.

The 4.5 gal tank on the EFI bikes will definitely burn 4.2 gallons when properly filled, though when it gets that low, taking off, it chugs a bit. There is extra headspace in the fuel tank, the only deductions from the 4.5 gals would be for the fuel pump volume, it's not that large.

It is up towards the middle of the tank on my 2009, not sure if it ever has been moved on later models, that's why it chugs on hard take offs with a low level.

Yes the carby bikes fuel intake is up a bit IIRC.

I am pretty lucky on my commute fuel management, right at 50 miles one way on my commute with gas stations at 14 miles away and 35 miles and at 50 miles on my route. Near my house, but out of the route a little, several between 1 and 3 miles. I usually gas the FXLR at 200 or so and the Sporty at 100-175.

Just for grins and giggles, I now own a Nissan LEAF E.V. which incorporates a range meter in the driver's dashboard. Within the Leaf owners' fraternity it's known as the G.O.M., Guess-o-Meter, as it's not very accurate. Bustert has it right - zero the odometer at every fuelling, I used to do this on all my BMW's, my Sportster and still do it on my Leaf.

So the low fuel light will still light up on the new speedo like it did before I installed the new sensor? If so, my low fuel light would come on around 140 miles or so. If I filled up then it always ended up I had 1-1.5 gallons left in the tank. At the mileage I normally get, that would give me about another 50 miles or so.

I'd get out and ride the thing and find out, if the weather AND the DOT would cooperate... Seems every time we get a good rain to wash the salt off, no matter what the weather is the DOT sprays more brine solution on the roads.
