it's too rich, probably stalling from fouled plugs. pull them and will most likely be wet with gas after a stall

The s&s is new. Probably should've said that in the beginning. The s&s guy said I needed to gap my plugs to .030....that didn't work...tried timing .....accelerator pump....nothing seems to work....

i've read that some of s&s carbs are too big for sportsters, only worked on 1450cc or more.. and i think it was the super E, try searching around

too lean? how do you figure it's backfiring and shooting flames? too much air isn't going to explode in the pipe

If you really want to know if it is running rich or lean read the plugs. I just went through this issue. It can backfire and flame with both. Only true way to find out is read your plugs. Read plug reading 101, it helped me out a lot.

Ok..timed it dynamically. ..played around with the carb...quick trip around the neighborhood went fine...took it for a longer ride it started missing around 35-40 mph in 3rd so I backed off the throttle which seemed to work momentarily. ...shortly thereafter started lugging and popping (didn't see fire) porcelain was tan on both upper rings on plugs were black..

Because a lean charge burn so slow it is still burning when the valve is opening, that's why.
