Me too. That's my reason for posting. The question is, when NOT using a VOES, what to do with the purple wire and how to set switch #1. We should only be talking in terms of the switch position - ON or OFF. The wire is not used and should not be grounded. As to the switch, Doodah Man has it covered in post 13.

Maybe I'm not of interpreting what you're saying correctly but:
This appears backwards. The only way to get the retard mode is to put switch one in the ON position.

It just makes the curves reach full advance early which I found out to be no good for my Ironhead....
???
The #1 switch doesn't absolutely have to be OFF but if it's ON (in retard mode) any curve selected will go to full advance at 1500 rpm. That's a lot like a points system. It won't retard because the purple wire isn't used.

With the Switch in the OFF position full advance comes in much later depending on what curve is used. Isn't that what you want?

The best answer for The Yukon Sizzler is to have switch 1 OFF.

If you not gonna use VOES switch when VOES mode is ON (SW1-OFF) , tuck purple wire off. SW1-OFF means VOES mode is ON (hence all the confusion and arguments in previous posts).
In RETARD mode (SW1-ON) purple wire acts as a retard trigger (when grounded) and can't be connected to a VOES switch.

Correct and this is what I meant.

Yes, SW1 OFF is the answer I had in mind. I should of been more specific when giving the answer in my post 2. Apologies for my laziness

Wow Stumbled upon this and I was just coming to the group for conformation as how to deal with this actual issue. I have my bike running well at the moment and have been playing with the settings to see what worked best for me...
Now to add the MonkeyWrench...
The reason I went with the Ultima elc setup is cause it offers the voes option. This coming winter I'll be finish both projects and was thinking of tossing a Vz21 turbo on my Mule. Cause a guy just can't be content with everything running fine. right?
My question to you all was going to be
1. whats bast setting as for the question you have all answered already above (sw1 off)
B. What in your best opinions would be the best setting or utilization of this ultima elc while running the turbo.
Needless to say the instruction are crap and after a frustrating drink or two I'm at a 3rd grade level in comprehension

thanks

a little further down the page shows this...

RETARD MODE USING THE VOES WIRE
This mode provides a convenient ignition retard for nitrous or turbo equipped bikes. When switch 1 is ON, the violet wire acts as a retard trigger. To use this function, the violet wire is connected to a switch or relay that will ground it at the desired time. The violet wire should not be connected a VOES when set for retard mode.
maybe someone else can elaborate on what kind of "switch or relay" they mean and exactly when the "desired time" is...

A hobbs switch that senses boost pressure and closes contacts.
At what pressure will depend on many variables.

Well finally got some time to get this ultima sorted on the '79, what a synch to time up, get the timing mark centre of the timing plug hole, rotate the unit till the light comes on, love it. Off for a spin, runs sweet, nice and responsive. Thumbs up here for the ultima, lets hope for many trouble free miles without a set of points and condensor permanently in the jacket pocket ! May reconsider in the future, but certainly happy without a voes.
