The stator issue isn't S model specific.
It can happen to any stator.
When one goes bad, most probably just chunk it and replace it I guess.
I wanted to see what the failure was, so I stripped it to find it as I described.
You can see in the second pic the plastic is still intact (not separated from the frame) mostly.
The wires were laying off the frame until vibration and heat made them move into the melted groove and ground out.
Until I hit around 5500, no problems. Afterwards, it would 'act up' until the RPM lowered below 5400-5500.

That's the kind of luck I have also. Just another day in the neighborhood though.

edit:
Hindsight's always 20/20, but if I had a meter hooked to the battery when it was chopping up, I would have checked for it sooner.
I didn't notice anything going down the road winding up, but it was draining my battery.... slowly.
I assumed the battery was going bad and had planned to get a new one.
Tested with a meter at idle and all was well.
I noticed it in my shop while doing other testing searching for 6000.
One time too many at 5500 finally sealed it's fate.

Any body ever come up with a streamlined wiring solution for these bikes?
