I changed mine two weeks ago before going on a trip and 3 1/2 quarts put the oil right on the top mark on the dipstick. After 3600 miles it is about 1/4 inch below the top mark.

Now I'll have nightmares !!!

When I service my 05R , I 've always put in 3.5 qts. I use the extra long filter, but I have not had any issues, and no oil consumption to speak of between changes.

When my husband changed my '04 1200c he couldn't get it to take all of what the owners manual said it should. He let it sit for a little while and it was showing high on the dip stick so he drained a bit out and left it. I kept worrying (nagging) that he must have done something wrong, I guess I owe him an apology.

Seems they charged you 4 quarts for the engine (maybe they stuffed the entire 3.6 in there) and 1 quart for the Primary. Hmmmm.

just found this thread looking for info on oil temps, and now I do feel better! 'cause my first oil change I did everything by the book, and I'll be damned if I could fit the amount of oil the book said back in the bike! I DID have to drain some to keep it from weeping out the filler cap. And I thought I was nuts?

All mine has ever taken was 3 qts. with the filter each time. Thats about 1/2" below the full mark. My oil filter stick is not stock. Have never had the oil "boil" out or stream out on 3 qts. add more and thar she blows

Finally! The MoCo speaks! I just saw this thread. The one and only time I ever put 3.6 quarts of oil in my 2004 1200C was the FIRST time. I followed the Manual.....NOT GOOD. There was a concensus soon afterward on the Forum that 3.6 was way too much and 3 quarts was more like it with a filter change. I think the posted amount of 3.6 quarts is what is needed for a bone dry newly assembled engine or after a rebuild, etc. Case in point, my wife's Rodeo states right in the manual that the oil capacity is 5 qts., but states right underneath that the capacity is 6.7 quarts on a newly assembled engine or a rebuild. I guess when you drain the oil in any engine you never really get it all out, oil sticks to parts, caught in pockets, etc. I bet a new or rebuilt 2004 or later Sporty motor does take 3.6 quarts but after that about 8/10 of a quart is trapped inside. Mine runs great and uses NO oil at a 3 qt. oil change.
