Problem solved. I had to burnish out a pit the float needle pin gouged into the brass tang on the float. I replaced it with a later model needle that has a broad base and no little pin, which will wear better. I found a countersink the same angle as the float seat and gently refaced it by hand with a bit of toothpaste. I then made a test rig from a little funnel, some fuel line and a water glass that was the same diameter as the float bowl. I set the carb on it so the float buoyed as it would in normal use, shutting off the fuel flow with the needle. I then poured Coca-Cola into the funnel (it's all I had at the time! Use food coloring if you have it!) and waited a while to see if it leaked. I lifted the carb a tad and the brown Coke flowed into the glass. Worked great. I also found hairline cracks in the outer plastic fuel fitting, so pulled that and pressed a new solid brass one in. For some reason testing with compressed air didn't show the problems, but this rig did.
I took the thing out for a test ride and pegged the speedo. It runs like a brand new bike. I believe the owner wants to sell it for $3,000, if anyone is interested. It's a bit small for me, but this thing is like new if anyone wants it. It deserves a nice home.
Thanks to all for your help and ideas.
