Default Significant exhaust pop at idle.

Hello, 2nd post on here. With your help was able to fix first problem. I rebuilt the carb and can get the bike to start. I turned in the needle closest to air cleaner until spring was about tight and backed out 4 turns. Now my first question is when you say full turn is that one complete 360 degree turn? I also turned in the screw next to the manifold all the way then back out 1. It pops and pops like crazy. I do know if has a pretty significant oil leak on both heads as I would call them in the auto world. Smoke rolling off that. When I twist the throttle at idle it stumbles big time. Pulled plugs and black so I know that means too rich. It was running enough to drive before but now it just about dies when I try to rev it up. Sorry for the huge post but I dont have the kind of money to take it and pay thousand bucks for a shop to fix. Thanks again!

since it's coughing it's probably too lean, with engine running turn the idle mix screw in or out slowly until you get the best idle, I'm assuming you're working on a zenith bendix carb.

Yes excuse me for leaving out important stuff lol. It is an adjustable zenith that was from the late 70s or early 80s I was told and put onto my 84 xlx.

adjust the idle mix, screw closest to the Y manifold with engine running, should be able to get rid of the POP.

So update, when I turn the throttle the piece inside the carb barely sprays any fuel one twist then the next twist is a good stream. I had to adjust my float up pretty high to keep the needle seated inside the bowl so it wouldnt leak out the overflow. Could it not be keeping enough fuel in the bowl? Also, when I hold the throttle back should it keep spraying fuel or does it only give it one shot?

do you have the float spring installed correctly? the recommended float setting is all I have ever used, and I've rebuilt and adjusted a bunch of zenith bendix carbs, in the 80s seemed everyone wanted one over the kehin kasneeze carb, then S&S introduced the super e, but that's another story.

One shot per twist for the accelerator pump. Important to know, your heads will have no lip for an intake seal if they are original and the intake manifold should match. Can you confirm this? It uses the wide, flat rubber bands for intake seals, right?

yeah, if he couldn't get rid of the pop then I would have him check the manifold bands, if they're the originals their toasted by now.

if the float is set high as you say it'll never run right, without the float spring in there and installed correctly it will flood out.

The float spring is in there, read the other sticky post about the correct way for that. Thanks btw! I did get it to quit popping when it would idle. But still wants to die off without me running the throttle. I had to quit for the night due to the battery dying so put it on the charger.
