Default Sportsters No More?

Is it True, is 2021 the last year for Sportsters?
WTF they have been around almost as long as me!
Is it the end of the World as we know it?

Yes it is true depending on what part of the world you live in. In the Peoples Republic of The Glorified European Union you cannot by them anymore starting from 01-01-2021.
Emissions blabla, environment blabla, Moco not willing to blabla...etc.

It is if you live in Europe.

I could not care less about whatever Europe does though, as long as it doesn't involve sending over US troops.

A ray of hope then
I even read somewhere that H D is shutting Down the Plant where they make them.
Here In Australia you'll be lucky to find any new ones on the show room floor.
That might be because of the Covid shut down though.

My local dealer says they (HDMC) plans on reducing the Sportster to 3 models, the Iron 883, Iron 1200 and the 48. There is no plan for discontinuing it in the near future. More models will become available if the market picks up. He said they may be working on a Revolution Max for it by 2025, around 992cc's but that it's just speculation. Sales on Sportsters will start to focus more on accessorizing them to personal tastes. Buy an Iron 883 and turn it into an 883 Custom, etc. The fallout from the pandemic is probably going to dictate a lot of future choices.
The Pan American starting price is $17,319 and the Pan American "Special" is $19,999.
Iron 883 is $9,299 start, the 48 is $11,299 to start.
There is so much mis-info and speculation out there, who knows what will happen.

I’ve had an ongoing discussion about this with my local dealer. Their gut feeling is that 2021 will be the last Sportster as we now know it. It is going to be replaced by something that will use the same 1250 engine as the Pan America uses. The only question is whether or not the Sportster name will continue*. The prototype/working model of the bike has been called the “Custom” up until now, but no one really knows what is going to happen.

The pics of the Custom 1250 look great, and I considered waiting around for it, but I decided I wanted a Forty-Eight again more than I wanted a bike with a new design.

*I think Harley is probably sick of people calling a Sportster a “girl’s bike”, a “beginner’s bike”, or whatever, and my best guess is that they’ll end up dropping the Sportster name and start fresh. They’ll probably drop the XL code, too.

Nah, don't think so. They don't care, they're just interested in selling. They are like any other company. They make you think they do care by pointing at their 'heritage' to give you a good feeling and that you are 'part of the Harley family'. Bullshit of course.

In their business point of view the Sportster as we know it is obsolete after 64 years. It's not worth the investment to adapt it to new emission standards. For the money and the technical challenges it will take to get this bike in par with those standards they might as well design a complete new bike. Probably for less money. Maybe they call that bike 'Hipster', named after their new clientele...

Triumph disagrees with that "model" and they are not doing that bad with the Bonnie
Royal Enfield too, they didn't miss with the Interceptor
Honda either with the Rebel
and Ford follows with the mustang

I'll keep the name, the Sportster is a living legend
it just need a newer engine, water cooled possibly
But the rest I'll keep it as it is

But what do I know ? I'm just nobody in a 3rd world country

BTW: You know why they'll stop making it ?
Because I bought one ...
It took me 20 years ... always late to the party

Ever heard of the 'new green deal?' That kind of thinking is here now.
