Default My new project

<a href="http://s849.photobucket.com/albums/ab56/RGT5/Harley%201983%20XR%201000/?action=view&amp;current=rogersbike175.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab56/RGT5/Harley%201983%20XR%201000/rogersbike175.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

not sure that looks like it's going to work. Looks like the rear brake master cylinder has been changed, probably got smashed when this went down and took out the sprocket cover....

I have lined up to buy an NOS exhaust when I get home

It's hard not to covet a project like that. There was a thread on here about what was the most sought after sportster. That would be my choice.

Looks like all of the hard parts to find are still on it too. You need a cam cover and a rear master cylinder which are easy to find on Eprey. Cam cover is the same as 81' - 83' Sportster: figured that out when I had to replace mine. I think the sprocket cover is too? Interesting exhaust and not sure but it may be saved by adding a reverse collector? I have one that looked worse!

Since the cam cover is functionally fine I am going to just finish the chop on it and expose the oil pump, I have seen some race bikes done up that way. I think the exhaust is the remains of a Supertrapp 2:1 with right side exit. I plan on putting on the stock exhaust for now, I may make a 2:1 for it later but think I will keep the exhaust high on the left side. The pipes are in pretty tough shape coming off the engine, I think from one of the pics I have seen they are rusted through at the engine....I can't wait to get home and see it. I will keep my eyes open for the correct sprocket cover and master cylinder.
Thanks for posting the photo Bob F, some day I will figure out what I am doing wrong...the bike has 6600 miles on it a friend went up and rode it says it shifts and runs fine with only the rear caliper sticking and dragging....

finally back in states and got an afternoon free to see the bike and spend some time cleaning and poking around, things look ok, only surprise was that from the spill that took out the sprocket cover/timing cover there was some damage to the lower threaded boss on the engine case that the sprocket cover bolts to has been welded up, it looks like a nice clean/well done job, but bothersome to find. I put a battery in, cranked it over to see that it would turned on the fuel and pulled up the enrichers and she was fired within the first revolution. Sounds good even with the mangled exhaust, definately a different sounding machine than my '77, it would have been more satisfying to have kicked it to life but am happy to hear it run. Up and down the driveway was all I did as it needs some brake work.

These bikes have some soul! I rode one on a group ride and was told by many that they were reminded of being at a mile track. At the time I was running the competition high pipes which are mighty loud...

The bikes handle better with the low pipe set up and I would guess many have both? I switch mine to a low 2 into 1 in the Summer for obvious reasons.

Talk about a cool project. It is beat up enough, that you can really do a lot to it without damaging a valuable peice of history. Have fun man. I know I would make it look like Scotty Parker's Grand National bike or Jay Springsteen's Battle of the Twins bike.
