I would stay with CE. I do on all my bikes. Like said, brushes are very easy to change. They are still built well, here, not overseas. So they last quite a while. As you should know by now, an Ironhead is not maintainence free, but it is reliable when maintained.

I also have fitted the Hitachi generator to my 81 sportster. It's very well made and mine starts charging at around 1500 rpm whereas the 65A didn't start until 2000 rpm. If you use the 82-84 regulator you have 13A output but you need to use the connector off the old regulator, just join the same colour wires from the later regulator the old connector to avoid changing the connector on the loom. I think it's far superior to the 65A generator.

I always wondered what was so magical about these generators. They are still using 1930 tech and the brushes wear out so why pay 350 dollars for them?

to avoid the Asian imposters.i bought one because I switched from 6 volt to 12 volt.tried an Asian imposter from v-twin.it always had an intermittent short.got tired of that.mine cost 400.00 from J&P many years ago.i have not 1 complaint.

That is true. thankfully I stumbled upon a NOS armature from harley and it's been no problems since (knock on wood). And that is really the source of my gen problems. Although I also recently had a reg go bad ... although it has been so long I can't recall if that is another asian junk thing or the original that came with the bike. I had a spare NL one which is japanese and the original japan stuff harley used is high quality. you have to get it nos tho.

I will probably cause an uproar but I have been extremely happy with my V-Twin alternator.

Been running one for almost 2 years now.

Prior to this I had a lot of charging issues. Bought a brand new CE generator and it only lasted a year before it started eating brushes. Ate up two AGM Harley batteries too.

Obviously I received a dud since I know Cycling Electric has a great reputation.

The V twin piece looks pretty neat too since the spinning cup is exposed.

I have been through Asian stuff ranging from 3 days to 3 weeks. no joke. The jireh gens were crap that lasted 3 days. v twin 3 weeks. I think with the v twin or any asian one -- you need to keep your batery charged as they will fry if you are running them with a low battery. I park my scoot outside and cannot trickle it and sometimes just jump on and go even tho i should charge the battery

For what it's worth;
I was thinking about a LiIon battery a while back and as soon as the supplier heard I had a generator set-up, he said forget it, lithium ion batteries and generators are NOT compatible. If you're considering a LiIon battery for weight reduction then an alternator is the way to go. Ray in Canada has a real clean set-up and everybody seems to have good things to say about it.
A third way to go; Since I was going for "the '20s look" I went with a solid state version of the early voltage regulator in 12v and have had good luck with it.
