Default Re 1986 ignition

Hi folks will a later aftermarket electronic ignition set up help
My sportster to idle any better run better
I mean is it worth buying something like maybe a Dynatec 2000i ( which sounds like a vacuum cleaner)
Will it be a better tech than what’s originally in my 1986 1100 ?

You can check what IgModule & Heads were used on different year/model here:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php?i...er_parts_chart

You can compare the updates over the years...

If it were me, and I wasn't concerned about keeping it stock, I would definitely upgrade to a programmable ignition (although not in the nosecone) & upgrade to the later CV40 with Acc'l Pump... And I would be checking the VOES to be sure it was switching at the right time for best performance...

Like any new product, the 1986-90 Evo Sportsters were tweaked and changed to work out some of the kinks of the original design - Hands-on experience with the original design showed some areas that needed attention...

So, to me, you too should be thinking of upgrading what you can in recognition that HD saw a need for change in some areas (along with your own observations of the weaknesses)...

Sure it will help. However, if the VOES is bad or not connected, it can affect the idle. I'd check that first. Then I would make sure that carb is adjusted correctly. Also do you know if the engine has been modified? If the engine has radical cams it will affect the idle. If you've already done these steps, then drop the cash for the ignition. I second what IXL2Relax recommends. BTW (if you didn't already know) the 86 1100s had the best heads until 2004. Some may ague that they are better. But either way the are better than any of the 1200 heads up 'til 2004.
