you're removing the speedo gear to do away with the speedo drive?? if so, it's better to use a later (74 up) 1st gear. don't forget you'll need two left side thrust washers, not one, to go with that "new" gear.

Thanks, yes that’s what I’m doing. Is that later gear the reason for the 2 left side thrust washers? I don’t remember reading about this but I think DR DICKs routine was to cut the neck off 1st gear leaving just enough room for the normal thrust washer. Hoping for a later gear and will put the original to one side if I can.

Somewhere I’ve seen a diagram showing the flow of power through the gears in red, but I can’t find it in the FSM so must have been somewhere else. Can anyone remind me?

Does the shift shaft normally pull straight out, or is this fitted when the cases are assembled and stays put? I’d like to remove it to check and clean properly, but it hits the casting. I can grind a bit (mostly flashing) away and it should pull right out.

That is a particularly large shifter rod assy.

Hoping I can fiddle a new seal in there too without the cam cover coming off.

i thought I remembered grinding that on mine.i replaced both shifter shaft bushings w/o removing the cam cover.
