Default Mystery Hole

No, not the one Rosie O'Donnell tried to show everyone on the View the other day. (because that's a mystery no one wants to solve)
The issue is this hole on the rear cylinder head of the M2 Cyclone motor I have. I assume it must be for a compression release. If so, why none on the front? And why does my identical year Buell Cyclone motor not have it? I'm wondering if work was done to the motor. The heads are not the same color as the cylinders, as they are on the other motor. Is there a way to tell if they are the Thunderstorm heads? There is a another difference I see. The motor that is still in the bike had a flat surface on it that neither the other Buell motor nor my other two Sportsters have. What is its purpose?

Here's the motor I bought with the hole and heads that appear to be like the other motors. You can see how the head is black, but the cylinder is alminun:



And here's the one that sits in my Buell Cyclone - no hole, and that flat surface on the upper right:



Does it look like someone swapped the heads? Could I have lucked out and gotten a motor someone had work done on to necessitate a compression
release?
I guess I'll find out one way or the other when I tear it down. I had to wait until I had it in its new frame to see if my old '71 Honda tank would clear the motor.

It's not a compression release if no air is coming out of it........

If it's a blind hole, my guess is it's for a temperature sensor.

Thanks. That would make sense as I just shined a light into and found it doesn't go all the way through. Curiously enough a cylinder head temperature gauge did cross my mind. I had actually thought of getting one. Any thoughts on the flat portion on the other Buell motor?

The hole is for a temp sensor...same heads were used on the fuel injection models (like x-1) the flat spot is just a boss that didn't get machined as the Buell uses a different engine mounting system than a sportster, but started with same head castings. No need to make the hole on the Buell but the spot for it is in the castings for both.

That's a rear Thunderstorm head, as indicated by the flat boss, matching the
heads I bought new in 2003 or 2003. On mine, down inside there is a threaded
hole for a temperature sensor where a second spark plug would go if you had

That is a temp sensor hole for the early DDFI Buells. The head was later recalled in favor of an otherwise identical head but with a relocated temp sensor where a second spark plug would go, near the middle of the head. If you're not planning on utilizing the DDFI, it isn't a big deal.
