Whitt's H-D in Manassas, VA is my dealer. They have been in business about 30 years-have move 3 times & now have former Southern States building which give them much more room. They gave me a good deal on my bike, everyone is helpful & friendly, good mechanics. On the subject of dealers, Groves H-D just opened a brand new facility in Winchester, VA. Huge, beautiful building, & huge inventory.

I wouldn't let the guys in Ann Arbor (my selling 'stealer') work on my lawnmower, let alone either of my scoots. Last time I had my Ultra serviced there (20,000 mile service, 2 years ago) they removed my front wheel and failed to re-tightened the axle collar screws. They were finger tightened only. Also left out a screw on my fairing and when I confronted them I was told "It was missing when you brought the bike in". We went toe to toe. I called him a "liar" to his face and inquired why it hadn't been replaced and added to the bill? He couldn't answer. Then I showed him the axle collar nuts. He apologized but the damage had been done...I won't ever go back. The 'stealer' in Toledo, OH is on the same wavelength as the one in Ann Arbor.
I won't do business with them either. However, the dealer I bought my sportster from is better. Napolean OH is 55 miles away, but I'd rather give them my bidness. I had a talk with the service manager, told him about the other dealers and now when I take either bike in for service, they actually have a 'tech' working on it , instead of a 'porter'. After the warranty is gone, they won't be seeing me either.

We have several dealers in the area. I think it helps that they have some competition. Within 45 minutes there are 5 dealerships. The sponser for our chapter seems to have great service and the help is friendly. During one of our chapter rides last summer one of the guys blew a rear tire about an hour from the dealer. The owner brought the guy a rental bike and picked his up to take it back for a repair. I thought that was pretty nice. The bike he brought was a SE Ultra Classic. I need to bring some nails along for my tires...
I haven't purchased a bike there though. I got mine used. Not a lot of 1993 models at the dealership.

I have five dealers within a 50 mile radius of me. 3 are under twenty miles. I only deal with one of them, and then only when I absolutely have too. I've never owned a new scooter, so I have no experience with dealer sales departments. I went in one dealer last year just to see the new models and had just started talking to a salesman when a fine-dressed fella walked in. The salesman couldn't cut me off fast enough to go fall all over this guy. Granted I wasn't buying, but the sales guy didn't know that...hell, I figured he is probably on commission and has a family to feed, which is cool.

I got my bike from Gatto in Terentum, PA (just outside of Pittsburgh). There are two other dealers within 20 miles and there must be six within 50 miles. Hopefully, the competition keeps them on their toes.

Gatto is OK. The old parts guy used to give me 10% ( but the new guy doesn't. Doesn't seem like he gives a shit about much of anything. The service and repairs they've done there have been OK. I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling when I walk into their service department, though.

I'll keep going there for service until they screw up, but from now on I will get all of my parts from either Spirit HD (much livelier parts department and only half as far) or Zenotti's (just up in Butler--less than 50 miles).

Santa Maria Harley-Davidson, Santa Maria, CA (www.centralcoasthd.com). Great dealership, great service. Everyone there (management, sales, service, parts, and motorclothes) seems to be recruiting customers as ambasssadors. They get to know you on a first name basis and treat everyone with respect, and are also very supportive of the local HOG chapter.

Also, locally, Gary Bang Harley-Davidson in Atascadero (www.garybangharley.com) to the north, and SB Harley-Davidson to the south in Santa Barbara (www.sbharley.net), are both excelent, traveler-friendly dealerships.

If you're traveling the Central Coast in CA, any of these is worth a stop.

I live in Iowa but the closest dealer is J&L Harley in Sioux Falls, SD. They are owned and operated by one family. They hire family or freinds, and they suck! They really do. I bought my sporty there and that's it. I won't buy anything agian. The parts guys don't know anything, the service dept. doesn't know anything. And the salesmen think theier bikes are all worth piles of money! I really don't like them!
