I just replaced that front brake light switch on my '06 custom. You'll need a soldering iron, some solder obviously, about 2 extra hands the smaller the fingers the better, and some patience. You will also need heat shrink tubing and a zip tie or two, but those come with the switch.

So here is my story and it's a sad one
My bike has 25 miles on the meter - just got it home from the shop.

I got this new HD grips and the chrome housing kit + chrome switch caps read all the postings about what to do and how to do it. I thought why open everything twice? So I started with the left side and it worked exactly like discribed by others. The glue came off easy and I didn't put glue on the new ones. So far I thought good job. Then I started with the right one. Payed attention to all the things that can get lost. Changing the chrome switch caps was a pain in the , but it worked. Then the worst happend, getting the cables on the grip was not so easy. Somehow the cable got free and I didn't know why it was. Then I realized the whole drama - the cable got lost from the carburator . I looked at my bike and the whole thing had something hopeless. You can't reach that . My first thought was get the fuel tank off to reach it. So I started to loosen the front screw of my brand new bike. Well that didn't help at all. The meter blocked lifting it and gave way for about 1". After 2h I gave up. Chrome housing kit + chrome switch caps and grip not installed and a new bike that can't go nowhere not even to the shop to show them the mess I did. The wife started her "I told you..." but stoped the moment she saw my face - way wrong moment here!
I called the shop. They where really great and told me to detach the air box so I can reach the lower end of the cable. I'm gone all week knowing my bike is at home messed up. I hope I get this attached again.
So changing the grips can include some unexpected things. Be warned!

Before you remove the housing from the throttle side place a small cardboard or wood wedge in the brake lever so that you do not damage the rubber boot on the brake switch.

Wondering if someone could clarify this a bit more. Do you mean between the brake lever and the grip so that the lever stays open, or within the housing itself. If so does anyone have a picture of the area?

I was just reading up, and want to be prepared and avoid a possible tough time.

As you pull the lever, a gap opens up on the front, between the lever and the body of the lever bracket. That's where you put the wedge.

Hey guys, I just finished installing new bars AND GRIPS on my 09 Iron last night, and thought it wasn't all that difficult, I have one thing to definitely confirm in terms of a
PITA....what they say about those little brass colored ferules that go over the balls on the end of the throttle/idle cables growing legs and finding a new home(if you're not careful & drop them), is the friggin truth. I spent about 25 minutes going back in forth in my driveway looking for that thing and almost gave up! Good thing I needed about 15 minutes to cut the old grip off the throttle sleeve, or I would have wasted a whole lotta time. Also, I installed some rubber grips/non-Harley jobs, so mine didn't fit in the slot of the switch housing, rather just slid over the bars like some bicycle grips. I just used a lot of hairspray and let them dry over night. Should be all good! Just wanted to share my nightmare so other DEFINITELY know to be careful with those little ferrules
(Part #56508-76 in the parts manual if you care). Alright, thanks for all the great info on this site and best of safe riding to you all.
