Default Battleship New Jersey

Played a little hookey today even though the weather was less than stellar ///but any day riding is a good day in my book. Now I'm no Parrotthead.....I can't travel through 4 states in a day trip.....I needed something a little closer to home. The lightbulb went off and I decided to visit a place I'd been wanting to visit for awhile. The USS New Jersey in lovely Camden NJ. I did a little research and realized the Ship was only open for tours on weekends in November.........except Thurs Nov 4th and Fri Nov 5th....because of teacher's conferences the kids were off.....AWESOME.

Now the Camden Aquarium is right down the street from the ship and as I was passing it I could see it was a mob scene of kids and moms and dads and strollers. Crap....I really wasnt in the mood for all that. However I kept on through the drizzle and as I parked near the ship area I realized I was just about the only person in the area....AWESOME.

Except for one family I scooted past on the self-guided tour, I had the whole ship to myself and never saw another person except a couple of the tour guides. One was an older gent who was a World War II vet himself...real nice guy....I thanked him for his service of course.

The next guy I saw was in the Electronics Control Center and I'm guessing he was pretty bored cause I got the VIP treatment and watched some videos of the Big turret guns firing and the advanced weapons systems like the Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles. I really liked the Phalanx anti-ship missile defense weapon....like a gatling gun on steroids.

I have to say I was 10x more impressed than I thought I was going to be. Maybe I'm getting a little jaded in my old age and thought it would be just another hokey tourist trap. No....this was the real deal. I've never been on a ship and this was really impressive. I work in the telecommunications field and was just looking at all the wiring and switches...amazing.

Anyhow I recommend it to anyone in the area if you've never gone. Here are a few pictures....I didn't get too carried away. I wanted to get my bike near the ship for a picture and start a "Your bike next to a battleship" thread but I couldn't figure away to get it in view without getting arrested

Very nice visit, and you picked the right day. I was impressed by it when I went, but you had it almost to yourself...much better. I used to have the battleship license plates on the car and they got a lot of questions I could not answer, so I would tell folks to go see for themselves. Thanks for your photos and raising awareness of something neat to visit.

Nice write-up and pictures! It's on my list of places to go. Maybe I'll bring a group there next summer.

I have called in fire support from the New Jersey and seen the damage caused by the 16 inch guns. They're just flat out amazing and scary as shyte.

I've heard, not seen, that they had been used to clear Helicopter Landing Zone's in the Jungle in emergency's. Supposedly one shell could clear an area big enough to bring in a Huey. Hell, the shell they fired was over five feet tall and weighed almost 2,000 pounds. And accurate as hell.

we should organize a run to the battleship and talk sportser's after a tour of the ship. Then get a picture of all our bikes from the circle up top by the aquarium with the New Jersey in the background. what do you think?

It's a shame you didn't go across the river and check out that ship's grandfather moored at Penn's Landing - The Olympia.

The NJ is a grand ship

This would be cool as well. If you do this during the summer the ferry is running and you can cross the river to the Olympia. I could give a guided tour of that ship. The other alternative is I could set up a group tour and we could get a discount on the parking. Normal price is $17 and no they won't charge 1/2 for bikes because they park 2 in a spot.

If someone wants to run with this I will help.

I could see the Olympia from the Camden side. If it had been a little nicer and earlier in the day I was thinking of riding over. Now I have another place to visit which is good.
This other ship was docked near the Olympia also. Not sure but looking up online it says its the Moshulu.

Come Spring or Summer, I would be up for that...I'm on the disabled list for at least a month at present. : ( It would be great if we can get bsporty out on her bike to meet us, too.
