A question:
Which is the substantially difference between a Late84-85 XL transmission (used on Iroheads)
AND a
early 1986 XL transmission?
then ther's the
Late 86-90 trasmission commoly called 87-90 with stock C ratio (18 T clutch gear and 26 T 4th countershaft.)
I ask because I always thought that Late84-85 XL were the SAME as early 86 XL trans.
SO my question is : Why there are two differnt XL trans (Late84-85 XL and 86 XL trans) when they are the same?
Both uses splined clutch gear on the maishasft and both are equipped with later style mainshaft and countershaft , and both are with 17 T clutch gear and 27 T 4th countershaft.
Where I'm wrong?
thanks

I asked because i need the bike as fast as possible on the road again and now I have little money to spend on it.
SO my plan changed to this but I NEED YOUR HELP to confirm it's a good plan.
Plan:
1) Buy a late style Assembled Countershaft cluster from Vtwin (around 260 USD)
part number 17-1262 (L1984-86)
2) Buy 2nd and 3rd gears for the Mainshaft (Vtwin parts at around 140 USD)
35296-56A and 35305-56A.
3) using a Sifton trap door 84-90 (I already have it).
The stock 1990 I have main shaft is straight and the mainshaft 2nd and 3rd gears are the only I need.
4) collecting month by months Andrews parts to build a stronger trans (ready in about 1 year).
5) not add stress to the bike to preserve the assembly until the the total Andrews one will be ready.
What I need to know, from you experts is IF mechanically the 1) + 2) + 3) plan is OK.

I would not put that Chiwanese junk in any transmission for any reason, but that's just me.

I agree and I have your same "sentiment" o chinese things , but my plan 1+2+3 is 100% machanically compatible?
Strange is that when I broke the countershaft ..
the only bad gears are slightly scored 2nd (CS and MS) and bad ruined 3rd (CS and MS from both Andrews supposed to be the hardest ones).

Not, the Buell needs some attention. It's not safe to use it for more than some km.
I need a bike to go work. My 1990 is my main bike since 1991.
The only in good shape (for now....) is the XLH 1975. But it's essentially sold to a guy.

You are forcing me to dive into the parts books.
On the c'shaft, from late '84 through '90, all parts are the same EXCEPT the c'shaft 4th gear, which was changed for '87 - '90 models, as you already know. So, buying the late '84 assembly that you listed would be fine, you would just need to swap your existing c'shaft 4th gear to keep your 4th gear ratio. A better (stronger) alternative would be to buy an early '84 and earlier c'shaft cluster, and the shims needed for 1st gear and c'shaft end play, as was discussed earlier. Much stronger shaft and all the gears but c'shaft 4th are compatible with what you have now. But again, I would not put that junk in any transmission for any reason.

Just throwing it out there but in 2008 I bought an NOS 17/27 gear set from Harley. I ran it for 5 years, was able to run a 23 tooth drive sprocket which put me around 4000 RPM at around 80-85 mph. When I did the 1250, 86 1100 heads and Andrews V4 cams the bike really liked the stock 21 sprocket. I put about 3500 miles on them. I’m sure I still have them. Maybe let them go if you want them.
