I have to say that it looked like he was making a right turn at first. I don’t remember thinking that the lead bike was too close but in truth he probably was...

He advised us to always keep an escape route available. Smart advice, and it stuck with me. So far I have not ended up in anyone's trunk.
that is solid advice but I think one thing can be added to it. Remember you can stop faster than the cages around you, but can the cage behind you stop as fast as you, remember that when choosing where to position yourself.

That is an excellent point.

There's talk about introducing a similar law here (UK), but maybe requiring having to give as much as 2 metres room. If it's that much, there's many roads on which it would be impossible to pass cyclists at all!

And I bet that cyclists will still ride up the inside of slow moving queues of traffic, mere inches away from vehicles.

No concessions for bicyclists until they are regularly ticketed for violating the traffic laws just like motorists... AND they are required to have a separate license (with fees), carry insurance against creating a hazard & help pay for the roadways they ride upon... They get all the privileges with none of the responsibilities - - - - But that kind of 'entitlement' thinking is running rampant in our modern society? Socialism is being popularized...

Something I hate at this time of the year is the idiots that mow along the roadway and blow their grass clippings out into the street... Grass is nearly as slippery as ice...
