I have always left my petcocks open all the time. I'm talking since the 60's. I have only ever had one time when a float stuck and drained my tank on the floor. I wouldn't advise it if you have a heater or something with flame where you park though.

I have Pingle petcock's on both Harleys, and I leave them open all the time.

I have a story about that. Involves a 58 pan and my basement and lots of greasy smoke damage. It's a hoot! I still park in the basement but I turn my petcocks off and have an electronic pilot on the hot water heater.

Sorry I haven't responded in a while. Life has me busy.
I replaced the float (seemed) saturated with gas when I would squeeze one side of it a finger print would be on it even after day or so. Only one side.
I also put a new needle and seat in it.
Problem is resolved.
