Just out of curiosity...has anyone ever bought a non running Ironhead that didn't run amazingly (the last time it ran) according to the seller?

I have heard that happen, more times than not (not just an iron head, but vehicles in general). I haven't personally because if I don't hear it running and get a chance to ride it, I walk away. Would rather spend a little more for a bike I know that runs, than buy a potential money pit.

I roll the dice sometimes. I usually win though. I am not your average scooter tramp.

I know how to take a compression check before I buy from a stranger. If I have any doubts. Price will become adjusted accordingly to my druthers.

Picked up a barely free yamaha xs 650 hardtail that way. Guy wanted one price. I gave another. I went home with it.

Default Voltage check

Alright guys heres some info
The seller told me it was an 83 but i looked up the vin and it says its an 84 which ibelieve its an 84, my battery reads 12.9 volts as its a new battery, and ibeleive its wiring its simplified as theres no turnsignals no tail light and i can click the starter with out turning the key to the on position.

Just unsnarled the wiring on my 1980 XLS from something like you are experiencing.

I got everything working but the turn signals so far.

Have you bought a manual yet?

Best

Meh

Maybe someone knows a cheaper one. It'll save ya some time.

Usually a bad battery. Is there a reason to think the battery is OK? [I have not read this thread in detail ]
