I think Barber's is fantastic. I recommend it to anyone who has any interest in motorcycles at all. Go when the races are on. Allow at least 2 days for the museum as well.

I would have had the heads skimmed. Just me maybe. But belts and braces.

You wouldn't think these things could warp.

But lapping them in will show you they they typically have low spots.

Did the scored piston/bore happen on the same cylinder that lost the head gasket ?

thanks for sharing what you found with your breakdown.i can't use head bolt washers with my modded XLR heads,the bolts would be too short.

Both pistons/cylinders were scored: 12:00 on the front, 6:00 on the rear.

I did check the heads with sandpaper on a glass tabletop, and they appeared to be straight.
