I've read on this forum that for a bad back (Spine) Road King Air Shocks are a wonderful upgrade on Sportys. Also, depending on the model, some Sportys have 2X the travel in the rear suspension. Add a Sundowner seat and that's about as good as it gets. IDK, still waiting on the shocks.
Last year I ran over a little patch of grass growing out of a crack in the pavement (gotta start riding better roads, haha) only going about 20mph and felt a breath taking pain in my lower back. Doc measured a loss in height of 5in. Not from the bump but from Osteoporosis over a long period of time. Shouldn't have broken that damn Harrington rod 10 yrs ago or I'd still be closer to normal height.

Howdy,
I have a stainless steel plate and 3 screws in my neck, to aid the fusion. I followed their directions to the letter and got off pain meds as fast as possible. No issues with any sport or activity.

It was three months before I could go pee by myself however, since they had me on a ten pound weight limit

Seriously, they do have graduated restrictive weights, and I did not break them either.

Good Luck no matter what you do,

kr

Update for me: now my doc says I need disc replacement at 5-6 and possibly fusion at 6-7. Second opinion in the works. I wouldn't do anything but I've lost so much strength and feeling it is affecting my ability to ride (as well as other stuff). I'd like to know how the OP is doing now.

Back in 1982 I compressed the vertebre in my lower spine in a dirt bike wreck. They gave me the option of 9 months in a body cast and 100% I would walk again or they could do surgury and I forget the %. I opted for the surgury and they fused 5 vert together and wired in 7 1/2" of rod on either side of my spine. I was out of the hospital in 5 days and back in college after 9 days. Moving alittle slow but still moving. It was 3 months before I was cleared to go back to work as a machinist. I was 25 at the time so I healed pretty good. The only problems I have now is when I work bent over for extended periods of time and then try to straighten up. Hurts alittle and I tend to walk like an old man but I get straightened back up within a few steps. I know people that put off surgurys as long as they can but I have had surgury on my back, wrist, shoulder and throat. surgury doesn't bother me abit. I would rather get in there and nip it in the bud then wait for things to get worse. Would you rather fix that little oil leak now or wait till it leaked all out and ruined the whole engine.

I've just been diagnosed with cervical (neck vertebrae) stenosis, which is a narrowing of the bone around the spinal cord, impinging on nerves at times. Or constantly, I don't know. Symptoms have been all over the map. Sometimes it is only pain in high or low neck, or the back of my head (least favorite). Sometimes I feel really unwell and just have to lay down. Mild numbness which feels like loss of sensitivity in my left arm, and weird sensations (occasionally) in legs. Once in a great while, I'll get the chills really bad for a few minutes. So far, I haven't lost the ability to do anything, thank God. But it's very changeable. I'm in the process of being referred to a Neurologist a couple hours away, if they call me back.

I had 4,5,6 fused about 8 years ago and L5 replacement about 4 years ago.

Up until last year, I rode my crotch rocket no probs. I just kept a bottle of Alieve with me.

This is my first full season with the sporty, and I feel pretty fatigued in the neck/ shoulders muscles after longer sustained rides at highway speeds.

If I'm taking an interstate ride, I just slap on the windshield and it takes the strain away.

Thanks for the input on this. I had neck surgery six months ago, and have been wondering if I should even try to take my Sporty out yet. Still having pain and other weird issues that I don't know is related to the surgery for sure, but even wearing a coat with a thick collar for very long or having anything bunched up behind my neck feels like it just wears my neck out completely. I can only imagine what the helmet will do. But I am anxious to get back on the road and to get some riding experience under my belt.

Disc replacement is what I had. The bottom-most disc of the neck. Don't know if that's a true fusion or not. They used a plate with screws.

Fused c4-5-6-7. And still riding.
Two plates, eight screws, two pieces of plastic, and a piece of a dead guy.
I never ride alone.
