Default ICE - In Case of Emergency

I just got the following email from one the guys in the local HOG chapter. It sounds like a reasonable idea, so I figured I'd pass it on...

Going down on our your scooter crosses everyone's mind time and again, it happens, it's just a risk we take. As bikers often travel far from home and often travel alone, it could be very difficult to get word out to someone if something terrible were to happen.

An idea, by a paramedic in Britain, is rapidly catching on all over the world and is being adopted by many, including Sweet Cindy Lou and I. It's simple enough, just place the letters "ICE", which stand for In Case of Emergency, in front of the names in your cell phone address book, you would wish someone to call in the event of an accident. As almost all of us carry cell phones with us these days, this gives emergency agencies a quick way to identify the folks you would like to be contacted, in an emergency. The Washington Post published a great article regarding ICE, check it out for more information.

If you think this is a good idea, do it, only takes a few seconds.

Keep it in the wind and Ride Safe,

Gazza

Another solution for people without cell phones (I do still know 1 person without one any way), or for people who want to provide more info than just a number - the Road ID. I forget where I first saw a link to this but you can basically get an engraved dog tag with emergency info on it, comes in the form of a bracelet, anklet, shoe clip, or just ID on chain. Or instead of having your info engraved right on the tag, you can get an "interactive" one where the tag provides a phone number for them to call to get info that you provide online - and this can include extensive medical data if needed. Just thought it was a neat idea I'd share.

Good idea! Also if it's available on your cell phone it's a good idea to have the gps signal thing where it's on all the time and just not on for 911 calls. This acts like a locator in the event you'd have an accident and unable to speak or use a phone. I also carry a small typed paper, sealed in vacumn seal food plastic to waterproof it, which states my name, address, who to contact, that if I'm not wearing prescription glasses that I have contacts in both eyes, metal plate and 6 screws in C5,6,7 of my neck, etc. I carry this in my leather jacket zippered pocket, also have one in my wallet. I try and ride safe, be smart, and cover the bases in the event of an accident or death.

That's an excellent idea!

I have a laminated card in my wallet with my emergency contact numbers.
