Celebrating Sportsterpedia's Second Anniversary

The opening page of the Sportsterpedia has the answer to What _IS_ the Sportsterpedia?.

Please visit there and read it over. We are very much interested in having the XLForum community
comment (pro & con) on the Sportsterpedia and the future upgrades that might be needed.

2017 MAJOR REORGANIZATION

At the beginning of the year, Wayne (Hippysmack) and I (Ken) were having conversations about how to integrate some new information into the Sportsterpedia (SP as shorthand). It quickly became a discussion about the need to reorganize the existing structure of the SP to provide more direct access to the data. It seemed that it had become difficult to navigate through what you didn't need in order to find what you did need.

By March, Wayne had suggested a new overall format structure. With further discussions, I put together the new data structure that we have now and we began the task of moving data from the old pages to the new. It took us a while, but we got the data separated into the new IH & EVO stock sub-sections with the remaining data into the REFerence section.

During the past 10 months, using the new format, I estimate we now have 10 times the data in the SP compared to the beginning of 2017. Together, the forum has contributed much information which we have been working diligently to present in a useful way. The new menu structure of the SP has been successful at providing a more direct way to link to the collected information.

There is new information in almost all the various sections. We update sections with new information or pictures as we come across new or better sources. The history section has had pictures of stock models added to some of the spec listings. If you have a picture of your bike as factory stock, please offer it for the SP. There will also be a Gallery section where pictures of member's bikes will be posted.

By the way - The link on the XLForum Main Menu has been updated to say SPORTSTERPEDIA.COM, resolving any confusion. Thanks, Bert.

RECOGNITION

Thanks to Bert's foundational interest and efforts, plus our successful restructuring in early 2017, we are celebrating two years of progress on the Sportsterpedia. We have also noticed a number of members who have placed a link in their post signatures to highlight the existence & value of the Sportsterpedia. In addition to Wayne & myself, we have noticed these members have a Sportsterpedia link: sportsterpaul, Brad, Parrothead, mwXL_2006, shanneba and rokytnji. There may be others I have overlooked. If so, it was completely unintentional. Speak up if you have a link to the SP in your signature (we appreciate it) and I'll update you into this list.

We have gotten many good reviews in posts & behind the scenes of the XLForum. We have also received compliments from entities outside the XLForum who are aware of and are utilizing this effort. We are glad that the Sportsterpedia is recognized as a valuable source of usable information in the riding community.

Celebrating Sportsterpedia's Second Anniversary

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING

Bert created the space & structure for launching the Sportsterpedia in January of 2016. He intended it to be an extension of the XLForum. Since then many members have contributed in both direct and indirect ways. Wayne and I have been researching various subjects for the SP by reviewing many, many of the posts by members who were having issues or presented possible solutions to those issues. All of these posts (by newbies & more knowledgeable mechanics) as member contributions of both the problem and the solutions have contributed to the wealth of information now in the SP. Along with very good commentary, there were often great pictures of the process involved that we were able to utilize for illustrations in the SP (now somewhat hampered by the PB debacle). Other members have stepped up and contributed in a more direct way by submitting information they have collected and formatted to enhance the Sportsterpedia.

It's not possible to individually name all the contributors but, when looking at any data in the SP, you'll notice that there are many references to the threads, posts or member-specific source of the material, mostly with footnotes. We are grateful to all of you who have contributed to making the SP a valuable resource.

The Sportsterpedia wouldn't exist if it were not for all of the contributions from gracious XLFORUM members creating the vast knowledge base in the existing posts. Current subjects in the wiki range from Sportster history to specs and technical information down to tools and even a lighter side in the reference section - which has a list of quotes, including from our forum members.

MOVING FORWARD

We continue to seek your contributions to the Sportsterpedia. If you have collected and/or organized data for specific parts or functions of the Sportsters, please offer those to us for use in the SP.

While browsing or searching the SP, if you happen to find that something is in error, out of place or unclear, please let us know. As a living document, we expect to make corrections as necessary to improve the Sportsterpedia.

We hope you have found the new format as useful as it has been for us. We welcome any ideas on future projects or sections that appeal to you. Although we have to work within the framework and limitations of the software, along with our own time constraints, we welcome any exciting new ideas you may have.

Much work is yet to be done. There are still sections that have not yet had anyone available to work on them. But they will eventually be populated with quality information and the SP will continue to become an even greater resource.

You do not have to be an expert to contribute (we're not). Everybody can help with this effort - Already, in indirect ways, everyone _IS_ a part of the Sportsterpedia.

Bert has made the Sportsterpedia available
for everyone to use and enjoy.

Congratulations! You guys have done a great job and it is really a great resource.

I can't even begin to imagine how it will develop in the next two years.

Many of us really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this.

There are no specific pics needed at the moment I can think of for what I'm currently working on. But, it doesn't have to be specific. We can post any picture now and later come back and fill in information regarding the picture(s). Whether that be a pic of 2012 rim, 2006 caliper, 1986 seat or 1968 oil tank doesn't matter.

Many of the threads have questions that could be more easily answered or solved with a picture or two. There was a recent thread that was about something else but a situation arose where the MAP sensor was confused to be a VOES. Without even having an article to go along with it, one of these pics would clear up what a MAP is and where it is located.
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...olute_pressure
Those pics weren't on the Sportsterpedia at the time but the question made us think that it would be nice to have some for future use. This article outlines the function and testing of the MAP as well and it will always be there regardless of what picture hosting site goes down next. So, the wiki does preserve articles and pictures in the forum threads (as we can get to them).

When we come across an article to be written, we try to include pics with it to enhance the worth of the subject matter. I am currently in the middle of transcribing Service Bulletins as seen in the History section: http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/s...istory:99xx-01 under the sub docs at the top. This information is also being added to the year change information in the history section. Some bulletins require more information to be added for them to make any sense or show changes made from previous years. That collection of information ends up in the related IH or Evo technical pages. So, I do not know what subject I'll be working on until I open the next Bulletin.

Thanks very much for the offer.

In order to be able to expand the requests/needs & to manage responses, I'll start posting a list in our Admin Thread so you (and others) can check if you have (or can take) the pictures we need...

Start checking here tomorrow:
