Me too, whitewalls. My bike doesn’t require any prime kicks, but it does require a slightly wider opening at the throttle slide and I do that by turning the idle screw in a few turns. You could effectively achieve the same result by twisting the grip slightly, but too much and you loose the fuel vacuum to the jets. Then as the engine warms up I gradually drop the idle speed.

warm machine does not need primer kicks
when cold, i give the two kicks because hd only turn one cyl per kick
if cold and no primer kicks, sometimes it will attempt to fire off but instead sorta wheezes out and if she rolls back, way more kicking because now you have to clear the cyls
this is compounded when you have a points ign, the compu-fire has eliminated a lot of start issues and the dreaded cough back and die syndrome at stops.
to each their own, i installed electric foot.

I agree everyone has their own methods and each bike seems to have its own personality.
My bike has points ignition. I clean the tips and set the gap during Winter maintenance and never have an issue. It starts easily in 1-3 kicks with never a prime kick. When it's warm or hot I don't even need to really kick. Just stand and let my weight bring down the kicker and it fires right up. The VM38 is the best way to go for a kick only Ironhead.

Spark one cylinder per kick or turn one cylinder per kick???
