Hi Doodah,
Everything I,m replacing has just died of "Old Age" lol
There is nothing, so far, that's actually scrap, just very VERY worn
Pinion rollers and drive shaft rollers being a case in point.
Both sets were "hammered" but not actually wrecked.
I have no idea how many miles this bike has REALLY covered … I get the feeling that the USA is a BIG place though...….
Like the bores …… just plain worn out.

lynnx, do you mean they were pitted or flat spotted, or were they still functioning. i'm only asking like that because the transmission is the number one reason for destroyed engine cases. ideally, we'd like to see them happily on the road rather than in pieces.

The rollers were pitted, but still rolling, even ttling whilst they did it.!
Apart from some tooth wear even the box wasn't bad (see earlier pics)
If it wasn't for the compression being down to 70 psi on both cylinders the bike would probably gone on for another 10000 miles!
I did finally achieve something today though ……

Before.

After.
I shall now commit some crimes as I have no fingerprints left.

So, bought a lovely front mudguard (fender) from Germany but need to make the stays,
and ordered the 2nd tranche of spares from JW Boon in Denmark!
Truly an international rebuild.
Oh, and Torrington bearings from France.
I,d buy spares from the US but tax, carriage and import charges are crippling.!!
Sent off the hub and fork legs for rechroming - THATS crippling too!
Still no news from DVLC …. is that a good sign or a bad one ? (nervous) lol
Still trying to source a narrow drop center flared flange rim for the front.
Want it to match the rear but is proving elusive. Ideas?
I also want full covered 14" rear shocks - anyone got a good part number?

If you need any other Torringtons, try these

They might not say Torrington on the packet but that company is owned by another major brand or vice versa, so you’re not getting Taiwanese stuff.

New bearings on the way.
DVLA having a bad day - want to view the bike to check numbers, not a problem in itself, just the bike needs to be "complete" ummmmmmmm. oh bugger.
Ok, next year then I guess!!!
More parts needed - pays to check everything I guess.
There is actually a piece missing as there is only one ground end present!

Haven,t found it yet!

Yeah, I found that a pain as nobody wants to insure it (even against fire etc) without a reg.

When you re-do the paperwork I’d suggest getting a dating cert off the Europe branch of AMCA, or at least a voluntary MOT - the more paperwork the DVLA have to look at the less likely they are to visit. If they insist on visiting I’d have brochures printed out to show them it’s as manufactured, in case they think HD = chopper and slap a MSVA and Q reg on you. I’m a little skittish, but I don’t like (or see the point of) Q plates. Just an excuse to pull you over for a looksee.

I had a snapped tower spring too, thought it was a rarity!

I,m insured through "Heritage"
They insured my other bike (a cb750a "EARA") with no reg and the Harley without issue, BUT they seem disorganised and you have to prod them to get what you want.

I rang SGS and they checked the DVLA ref - said they need to check vin and engine number against what I,ve put in (best stamp vin into frame then) and all they need is a rolling chassis with engine fitted, so next spring I,m planning.

A brochure from 1960 would be a death knell lol …. this bike doesn,t look ANYTHING like what it should, but the rules state "substantially altered" means engine change and frame change, which will probably be OK since the engine isn,t (visibly) altered and the frame hasn,t been raked or cut. It doesn,t LOOK chopperised. Does it? Please say no!!

I checked the tower springs after reading about them on here - seemed to work ok but just shows.
