I have the Quick detach windshield and used to take it off in the warmer months until my face shield was so covered with bugs one day I had to stop to wipe it off.
There was some type of insect hatch that day and they were flying in swarms out of the corn fields. (there is more than corn in Indiana )

The windshield also helps to keep bugs off the face shield for me.

I don't have a windshield and use a 3/4 helmet. You are missing out on all the free organic protein that Indiana provides.

Rain, hail, big bugs, birds and bird droppings, road spray from oncoming traffic, gravel from the tires of trucks in front of me....these are some of my favorite things -- you know, the song from The Sound of Music? Every time I clean the stuff off my face shield or see a new scratch or chip in it, I love it even more. Yesterday, something hit my face shield that sounded like a bullet -- don't know what it was, but I didn't feel a thing.
For some reason, I feel like I have MORE freedom with my face shield by not having to blink or duck when things fly at my face. But, each to his own...

My windshield is a 14" tall H-D detachable half-shield. I can see over the top of it and yet the wind is deflected over top of me. It's the best of both worlds. If something is heavier than the wind, it hits my face shield instead of my face. The ventilation is excellent and my face stays cool while I am in motion. If I'm not in motion, I lift the face shield with just a flip of my wrist. Life is good.

Over 1000 miles in one day - impressive!!!! I agree, riding without a windshield is exhausting. I feel like I'm attached to a drag chute and holding onto the handlebars is an effort at higher speeds.
I like your comment about your bike not being butt jewelry. I've started referring to my 2005 as "Patina" because she is showing her age very gracefully.
