Since you decked the cylinder you will want to check your head bolt length. If they are too long they will bottom out in head before the gasket is compressed. Also I ran 93 octane in my Shovelhead with 12 to 1 compression and never had a problem. It was dual plugged and single fire.

Thanks for the tip Ric, and yes, my head bolts are a bit too long now. I have some much shorter bolts I’ve been using for all this testing/measuring assembly/disassembly but it is definitely on my list to cut down my real head bolts before installing for real.

You may have to "fit" your intake manifold now also. Not a big problem if you are using bands.

Very little progress this past weekend. Partly because I distracted myself with creating faux patina on engine cases. I finally convinced myself to forget about it and install the engine in the frame. So here it is:



Other than that, just a couple of small tasks. I cut down my headbolts to accomodate the decked heads. Also I trimmed my pistin pin buttons to the recomended .06" float as I had only 01". Thanks to Chuckthebeatertruck for letting me know about the buttons needing clearance in this thread: http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2080234

painted my cylinders and heads this weekend. cylinders only had a few bare spots where I ground fins for some clearance but I painted them completely anyway. The heads had been welded in various places so had a lot of bare spots. All cleaned up and masked here, then painted:







That was yesterday. Now they are in the oven giving the paint a heat cure.
