You should be careful to get the clutch release adjusted properly - If it is not, you'll either have it pulling you forward even though you're holding in the clutch lever or you'll have it slipping even though you have fully released the clutch lever (which will burn up the frictions)...

Don't be in so much of a hurry to get it running that you overlook adjusting it to run properly...

I was so nervous about adjusting that clutch and the cable, that link IXL2RELAX helped a lot.
I buttoned everything up and took her around the block in first gear. I forgot how to ride. the clutch is very responsive and she shifted into neutral with ease. I am waiting for traffic to die down some before taking her out on side streets, but this is good. Everyone here thank you so much. I love telling all my skeptical friends about this site (they think everyone is wrong on the internet). I only dislike that it is dark here by 5:30pm. Off I go...

Got the bike up to third gear. Wow it seems like it's got more GO POWER, the clutch is very responsive and I dont hear any rattles and even the downshift to first gear "sportster clunk"is not so loud. One thing however, I still cant shift into neutral with ease or sometimes at all. I'm used to being in first at stop lights and the bike doesnt creep forward while stopped. I'm going to go easy on her, I guess i am still amazed it's fixed. Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge.

Glad to hear you are both in the wind again...

You might want to check your Primary Chain Tension - Did you get that nut released so you could set the adjustment correctly?

Also, the clutch release adjustment will affect finding neutral - While you don't feel it pulling you forward, it may still be some extra friction there causing tension to make finding neutral more difficult - Most of the time, you don't really notice a small clutch release problem while riding - it's when sitting still in gear that you notice it... or trying to find neutral when sitting still...

A slight tweak this way or that on the primary chain tension or the clutch release adjustment (under the derby cover - not the cable adjuster) may help... Of course, you should collapse the cable adjuster before adjusting the clutch release, then, once you make the setting of the release adjuster, you should reset the cable adjuster to make sure you are in the window of control...

So much for going easy, took her on the freeway. I think the chain tension may be a bit too tight as it is impossible to go into neutral and the bike is leaking oil from the derby cover.So I have to tighten that up better and perhaps loosen the primary boot bolt. I noticed the shifting became harder when the oil leaked out but all in all I'm pretty happy as I never thought a ride to the drug store last night could be so satisfying.
