Thanks for your earlier advice, and followup. I'm going to be doing some work on the bike this winter, my base gaskets are leaking so I'm fixing to pull off the top-end, and my barnett clutch plates squeal quite a bit so I'm also aiming to either go with an alto spring plate (can't find any in stock though) or the XR judder plate.

While I have the primary off, I'll pull the basket and check out the detent plate and shifter pawl as you suggested.

Has the bike ever been dropped on the left (shift lever) side?

Go with the XR clutch pieces, there's a narrow plate, spring and spring seat that replaces one friction plate.

The PO graciously provided the stock pipes in a box. After getting home (6 hour drive in a rented van through a snowstorm, but that's another story), I saw that one of the stock pipes had some rash on the bottom, so it's definitely been down on the right side. I don't see any signs of it having been down on the left side though.

Speaking of the XR parts, with my Barnett clutch plates (it's the kevlar extra plate clutch kit), do the XR parts (plate+spring+seat) still replace one (1) friction plate?

I have the Barnett Kevlar extra plate clutch pack in mine with one friction plate replaced with the XR pieces. That fixed the squeal.
Replace the OE release bearing with a FAG 7200B while you're in there. It's another worthwhile upgrade.

Ok great, thanks for confirming about the clutch plates.

About the release bearing, I've already replaced my stock bearing with a FAG 7200B, however I noticed the stock bearing had very little free play before removal, and the 7200B has tons of free play. Is this much slop expected?

Here's the stock bearing, just before removal:

Yes. The 7200B being an axial thrust bearing that's normal. The OE bearing is just wrong for the application.
