Default Buell XB9 Conversion?

I have been looking at the XB9 bikes and I come back to the same question. Can you put a 1250 kit on these? The stroke is shorter. Would the bottom of piston hit the crank? IS the only option to swap out the crank on them?

They're kinda a fun motor as is, would be a shame to change that just to make what everyone else already has.

Yes they are but I have an idea that I want to accomplish. It is still a few years down the road and will take a lot of engine work to accomplish. Just a personal goal that I want to accomplish.

They do make a big bore kit for the XB9. I don't know if they use the same exact pistons as the 1250cc kit or not. The piston diameter the is the same, the piston height??? I highly doubt you'd need to do any more than the top end though.
Personally I think it would be a cool project but I don't know anyone who's done it.
Displacement would be around 1050cc so the XB12 would still have the displacement advantage but I'd imagine you could rev the bored out XB9 a little farther.

Good point Sleeper. I found one in my area for a good price but first I need to get a few of my other projects done first. Looks like I will be getting one before summer of next year.

That's cool. Should be a fun bike to ride even left stock. I have a buddy who had one years ago and he still talks about that bike today.

XB9 has the same 3.5in bore as in a 1200 sportster.
The stroke is shorter on the XB9 (3.25in vs 3.81in) but with the same size stack so the pistons shouldn't contact anything at all.

The XB9 shares the same bore size and piston compression height as the 1200's. However, since the displacement is smaller due to the shorter stroke, it needs more piston dome to achieve a given compression ratio. So it's not just a matter of bolting on a 1250 kit and having 1050cc instead of 1250cc. It takes a special piston. We stock them. The cylinder is identical.

Speaking of "1050 kit", that's a really misleading name. The 1250 kit's 3-9/16 bore (3.563) only nets out to 1021cc when you put it over the 3-1/8 stroke of the XB9's crank. I got no problem with a little rounding up, all the companies do it, but 29cc seems excessive to me. I didn't name the thing though, and we're kind of stuck with it since the other companies call it this. If we give it a more honest name, people tend to assume it actually IS smaller, which it's not.

We could do the 3.600 bore of the 1275 with our special steel lined cylinder, and that would net out to 1042.5cc. Maybe we'll do that and call it a 1050. That'd be more reasonable. We haven't developed the piston for that application yet, but it's not hard.

The Buell stuff in general though is very low volume and getting lower all the time. So when it comes to making new investments in market offerings, it's pretty far down the list. Still, though, if we can leverage off the Sportster stuff and do it easily, there's no reason not to.

With heads that have the "best" work done to them and the 1021 kit installed with cams what kind of power would be expected. I know that temp and altitude makes a difference but a ballpark figure?

I went and did it. I found an XB9 for cheap and then I lowballed him an offer and he accepted that. I exchange money Tuesday with him for the bike. I already looked at it. It has the normal rocker box gasket leaks. 14k miles on it. I'll get pictures up here on wed.
