Ain't that the American Way?

P.S. Getting beat every weekend on national TV isn't helping the "brand value" much either. And dropping down a class to overpower the privateers in Production Twins isn't very impressive either.
Same thing happened with the Class C inch for inch rule change in 69.

ISTR that the original Production Twins rules allowed larger engines, leaving the XG750 based engine out of contention? So Harley are already benefitting from eliminating some of the competition to suit the XG?

But no, Indian read the rules, watched what H-D were doing, and correctly deduced that there was an opportunity. They spent a relatively small amount of money doing what Harley have been doing for some time, getting a racing house to build them a new engine based on an existing design (because the FTR750 is directly derived from that designers experience elsewhere, just as the XG is based on Harley and V&H’s experience) and campaigning it in a class where no one else was playing that game.

I don’t know that concentrating on Production Twins would help them, now.

Actually they quit Vance & Hines. The announcement from Harley was that they were going back to dealership sponsored racing. Sounds good to me, Vance & Hines was the downfall of the dirt track bikes.

On the flip side, the bar and shield’s struggling American Flat Track program hasn’t won a race since Vance & Hines took over race operations in 2017. Whether you point a finger at the equipment or the management, the team enjoyed top talent like Sammy Halbert and Brandon Robinson piloting the brand’s XG750R in the past. Both riders went on to win SuperTwins races on Indian’s FTR750 this season, so it’s hard to place much blame on the racers.

Read a little more. V&H is still building the bikes for HD dealers to sell.

I never said V&H weren't still building bikes. Maybe you need to read a little more.

Were I a cynical soul, which Heaven forefend, I’d say that the MoCo have just got it wrong. They thought they could quietly forget about Flat Track, leave dealers to race at their cost for love of the sport, and concentrate on selling Streets to hipsters via cheap stunts like demo races at the X Games.

Indian thought otherwise, built a proper racing bike for a fraction the cost of going road racing, and ate Harley’s lunch.

Let's see what develops.
