Default Thought my clutch went out or tranny, was front pulley

The local HD shop has done fine work for me.

My bike ran great to the local steak house. I pulled away with wifey after dinner and all hell is churning down low when I accelerate.

Gnarly mashing sounds were emanating from the lower, primary section and I didn't even bother to ride past the first drive way, no way, not even close. I didn't go a block further with the grinding sound that was so painfully bad.

AAA got me home, then a week later I pushed it a mile from my home to the HD shop thinking my clutch was gone and I should just fix the damn thing myself. Or maybe it was the tranny which I wouldn't be able to fix. I had a dilemma and the Friday off from work so I just pushed it a mile or so to the shop early before the sun come out.

I know a clutch wears and gives indication before complete explosion but a tranny? I had no indication in my case. The failure was sudden as a bolt of lightning.

It turned out to be the front pulley. My 08 Roadster is approaching 64,000 miles and I'm wondering If I should spend an extra $250 to have the drive belt swapped out for new when they change the pulley. Mechanic says belt is good. I'm going with that advice right now but still wondering what would you all do?

I could spend some chump change on a new belt that lasts longer than steel or stay with the old belt that will likely continue to out last the crank shaft and piston rods? Thanks for any opinions.

what happened to the front pulley? came loose? if the tech says belt is good, then re-use it - - there is no maintenence interval on the belt - just inspection

I presume the the pulley splines were worn out? Not sure why that happens, but yours isn't the first.

More than one of us has replaced perfectly good belts with new ones, just to use the "old" belt as a spare when going on longer trips.
