Default 40mm s e keihin carb

I have read the carb thread by the way but there's not much on the screamin eagle. I bought this on eBay as I was having bother with the standard butterfly keihin.
Is this too big for my '78 sportster, it ran but too rich low down I couldn't sort it with the. Mixture screw, the idle jet is 68. Does anyone know what jetting to try, main is a 160 , the bike has standard looking silencers and standard air filter.
I have since got my standard carb working ok but would like to still try this one,I like the pull up choke.
If the answer is bin it then fine, any advice appreciated

If it's the SE model, I expect it is a 44mm venturi --- I don't think there was a SE 40mm...

Unless you have the engine worked, the 44mm is overkill... That doesn't mean it should end up in the trash bin - You could probably re-sell it and get a standard Keihin CV40 carb that matches better to your motor...

Yep - You're right - I went back to a 1992 Accessories Catalog and found in the Racing Section that there was a 40mm SE Carb Kit (not CV) ... 29081-90A...

The stock jets were:
.68mm - Slow Jet
.60mm - Intermediate Jet
1.60mm - Main Fuel Jet
Blank - Intermediate Air Jet (but could be changed)

So that might be usable...

Does it have the two-bolt flange mount? There is mention of needing the older style manifold - 27004-86 - for installation on '88-'92 models...

Since SE didn't make carbs it would be best to post a pic or two of the carb so we can ID it. It could be a Kehin or a Mikuni or some bastard love child reincarnation of the QuickSilver or some such POS.

That's it in your link IXL , with the flange mounting too, I may try again with a smaller idle jet as it seems worst about 1/4 throttle , idle jets are available easily too same as the other keihins , thanks

A wee update, after reading info on here on the butterfly carb , I've done the mods to the float chamber that help the accelerator pump work better and fitted the pump parts off the SE carb . Big improvement , no hesitation now and bike runs great , so I think the keihin butterfly carb can be left on now. Just shows if you keep looking there's a helluva info on here, thanks guys.
