Xlch magneto help
I'm building a 67 xlch. It's my first build and I didt know anything about ironheads so I'm learning as I go. I'm working on the magneto now. I was told when I bought it that it had been sitting up for about ten years. I was gonna rebuild it, new condenser points and coil. First question is what kind of coil do I need? The drag spec old book has single and double. Second question is besides coil points and condenser what else do I need to replace? I'm missing the ball bearing and spring that goes inside the insulated block as well. I'll prolly have to make a spring and find a ball bearing for that because I can't find a replacement. Any help would be appreciated thanks

Have you spun it to see if it works?
Coil failures are rare and you your way brtter off with the og one .
I would clean and adjust the points first and give it a spin .
Many have been resurected with a good cleaning.
I have had many non -op because some one dropped a screw or washer down in the magnet.
Go from there.

does it spark with the current parts? if so clean and gap the points and leave it be... for the coil they almost never go leave it be.
maybe my mental picture is missing something but what ball and spring are you referring to?

..dont fix what isn't broke.
If by insulated block you mean the key lock components, you can find those parts.
Check Morris Magneto. They are pricey parts, actually all magneto parts are pricey.

I got the ball & spring from a locksmith.
If there is no drain hole under the coil drill one.

I cleaned it up and don't have any spark. The condenser and points I found pretty cheap so I'm prolly just gonna put new ones in to be sure. I spoke with somebody at Morris magneto about the bearing and spring he told me I couldt order just those components. Would not having those keep it from sparking?

I didt see a drain hole. Is it just to drain any water that gets in the mag?
The locksmith I went to to get a key made said he couldt get the spring or ball. I'll try a different one though.

I've used springs from a retractable pen.
The ball and spring ground the points through the wire that is attached to key block when key is in off position.
Just unhook wire and tape up eye then you should have spark.

In case you haven't found the stickys, I'll point you to them: http://xlforum.net/forums/s...d.php?t=465866
A wealth of information in there. Search on magneto and then read the links in the "Magneto Ignition" section.
Your no-spark issue may be more than your key block, but that's a logical first spot to check.
